Letter to Dad in the Aftermath

In The Aftermath
I longed for days like these
Tears used to roll down my cheeks
As a kid I dreamed of a dad like you
Now that you’re here I know it’s true
That you waited for me
Like I waited for you

Waited feels weightless
Pales in contrast to my distress
Somehow I find ease
That you paid the same fees
Emotionally distant
Both incomplete

As you read my literary lines
Where my mind committed crimes
You saw the depths of who I am
Understanding and interpreting each slam
Loving me beyond what I could comprehend
Helped me escape feeling the need to defend

In the present is where I find peace
Adoring you, adoring me, piece by piece
I ached for your attention
Now met with love in a new dimension
The process is what made it so sweet
Making my suffering near obsolete

In the aftermath of our contending
We finally found a happy ending
In continuous endearment of each other
Grateful for having you as my father
In awe I get to write you this letter
In awe how you’ve made my life so much better
